1 Corinthians 10:7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

Ouch, eating, drinking, and playing can all be idolatry. When I ate too much last night I never in my wildest dreams thought, “I better stop, this is becoming idolatry.” My problem is, I think I know the scripture, but I sure don’t “know” this one.

This verse shows how complicated idolatry is. If I watch a great Christian movie like “I can only imagine,” that is a good thing. If I watch a bunch of TV including risky shows, what is that?

Our idolatry often leads straight to our habit. Overindulging in many activities may become idolatry. Consider praying:

“Father, show me what I do that is idolatry, or that becomes idolatry.”

Second, God has this great life planned out for us/me. If I choose my plan instead of His, I almost have to be involved in idolatry. We were created to worship. If we don’t worship God enough, we will develop a tendency to worship other things. If we are not doing what God wants us to do, we will develop a tendency to chase other things.

Third, it’s complicated finding out what God wants you to do. Consider taking time daily for this, and asking God often what he wants you “To do.”

Fourth, I am praying often to “Trust God,” and to care about souls.

Fifth, idols can’t simply be removed, they must be replaced. Concerninghim.com noted, “Christ is better than idols because “all things were created through and for him” (Col 1: 16)—including your heart and your life. Christ is better than idols because “he is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Heb. 1:3). Christ is better than idols because “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God” comes only “in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Cor. 4:6). Christ is better than idols because in Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3).

Finally, consider making a commitment to replace 2 bad things with Godly things. Replace them with things like praise, Christian music, prayer, increased Bible-study, or other things like those. Godly things lead to a better life.
