Psalm 34 1 I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.”
Consider focusing daily on always giving the Lord praise. Praise was one reason why God favored David, and praise increases God’s love in us.
5 “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”
Sinful pleasure = darkness and depression. Being radiant is better.

7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.
8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.”
Sinful pleasure starts to and eventually drains everything from us. Lacking nothing is better.

14 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Finally, we end with what to do. We should make it a habit to turn from drinking/drugs. But if we skip the next command: “To do good,” it will be twice as hard to turn from evil. Consider praying:

“Father, show me how to “do good.” Teach me Your ways.”

To do good: #1 Be willing to do good. #2 Be prepared through Bible study and prayer to do good. #3 Make it a habit to be available today (and every day) to do good. #4 Pray to be filled with love so that you can do good effectively. #5 Study these 5 traits that Psalm 34 says to have. They will prepare you to do good and to have a great life.
It is hard to do bad when you are doing good.

Drinking/drugs usually takes everything. What if instead, we want to have everything? To have everything we need to do God’s will all the time. Americans call it finding our purpose. Read books on God’s will, and purpose. Pray about it. Become obsessed with it. Study articles daily online to become educated about how to find it.

Obviously, we need to quit bad habits to fulfill our purpose. But once you are obsessed with finding purpose and doing God’s will, bad habits really do start to fall away.

Our phones computers and electronic devices are either a 50-caliber bullet flying at us, or they can become a great weapon for us to defeat our foe. If we dwell on what our flesh wants, bad things happen. Here are tips on how to use E devices for good.
#1 Search how to “Overcome drugs or drinking” so many times that it automatically goes to that phrase just because you put in the O. #2 Search “New hobbies” so many times that it automatically goes to that phrase just because you put in the N. #3 Search “Spiritual growth.” #4 Have key articles saved in your phone. If you look at them so often that you can quote sentences from them, you have started to fire back at the one who is shooting at you. #5 Have prayers about quitting saved in your phone so that you can “constantly” have something else to think about instead of drugs or drinking.
Finally, consider making it a lifelong habit to use your phone and devices for good. It will be a huge help in the fight.

Bad emotions lead to depression. If you start to become angry, discontent, stressed, or any of a dozen negative emotions… Panic. Negative emotions lead to darkness and darkness leads to bad habits. Yesterday I noted that praising the Lord 100 times is a top 7 way to quit. Why? Because that praise is “fighting” negative emotions.

Second, exercise. Aerobic activity fights stress and fights negative emotions. Consider picking an exercise and then try to make it a habit.

Third, give thanks. It is a Bible command after all… “In everything give thanks.” Satan wants you mad at your wife/husband, job, and everything else. Instead, list what you are thankful for.

Fourth, attack your negative emotions with scripture. I just clicked “Verses frustration.” I scrolled down to the Open Bible list. Wow, it is great. Consider making it a habit to do this when your worst negative emotion flares up.

Fifth, realize you can do something. I have prob given 20 things “To do,” in my last dozen or so articles. Consider starting a notebook that has “To do,” written on its cover. Then, the next time your emotions attack, you will have something to do. Having something “To do” is a top 5 trick for fighting temptation.

Sixth, when you are fighting desperately against negative emotions, having something to do won’t be as fun as a vacation in paradise. So always remember… You are doing this replacement activity as work. As fighting back. As a powerful technique to get you through to where life gets good again. Plus…when you make it safely, life will start to get better and better.
