How to Stop drinking

How to Stop Drinking

How to stop drinking Attempts are often short lived. The reasons are, because alcohol helps one avoid painful emotions, escape reality and it sometimes can bring pleasure. We naturally tend to repeat activities that give us pleasure. What people who can’t stop drinking tend to ignore is the destruction that drinking also brings.

Drinking sometimes brings pleasure but it only provides a momentary distraction to your life. The questions are; is that distraction worth the cost to yourself and others? If you are to succeed in the challenge to stop drinking you need to know the cost to yourself inside and out.

How to stop drinking Key Point #1 Make a list of the costs of drinking (both to you and others). Rewrite this list twice a day until you memorize the top 5 most destructive costs and the top ten most destructive costs. R This is a tool you can permanently use to help you stop drinking.

So excessive drinking can be fun and it can bring you pleasure. It will also bring you disaster and destruction. Choosing drinking instead of becoming a productive purpose driven person puts you in a tornado that spins faster and faster but never stops. Unless you pull the plug on the power and learn how to stop drinking.

How to stop drinking Key Point #2 Make a list of the benefits to yourself and others of learning how to stop drinking. Memorize these benefits and repeat them often.

Life is filled with constant problems and these issues lead to negative emotions which are often triggers to addiction. It is wise to retrain your mind to react moderately to life’s constant problems. Anger, self pity, resentment, frustration or anything else that triggers your habits need to be changed. Make a note of what emotions cause you problems. Then pray, plan and prepare yourself to react differently. Your mind will learn new habits. If you get angry every day you have that habit. Now if you make efforts every day to keep your anger under control you are beginning to form a new habit which will assist you in knowing how to stop drinking.

How to stop drinking Key Point #3 Have a list of the top 5 ways you will react when certain specific negative events happen. Form the habit of thinking often each day about how the new you will react (moderately) when problem situations occur. If you have a list of 5 things that you will repeat when a problem arises you have a fighting chance. For example: your spouse comes home and he/she starts yelling. Your list says #1 don’t react, #2 Try to ignore them, they had a hard day. #3 Under your breath say to yourself, If I always react with love things will always get better. #4 Repeat the top 5 benefits to quitting drinking. (Even though this is exactly when you want the drink the most). #5 Pray that God will help you to keep your cool. Over time you can master your emotions. When you have control of your emotions you will have more control over your addictions and that will help you learn how to stop drinking.

How to stop drinking Key Point #4 Having a positive self definition is a key to overcoming addiction. We need to speak positively to ourself. What we say to ourself is very important.

John Howard Prin in his book Secret Keeping notes “that millions of heavy drinkers with negative self definitions (which are reinforced by negative self talk) have learned how to live sober saner lives using positive self definitions — they’ve revised the words they tell themselves.”

How to stop drinking Key Point #5 Write down negative comments that you often say to yourself. Then write out what positive comments you could replace them with. For example John Prin says

“Change “I’m a loser”                          to         “I’m a winner.”

Change “I’ll never be somebody”           to    “I will be somebody.”

Change “I’m incapable and undeserving to    “I am able and deserving.”

Change”I don’t matter much”                         to         “I matter a lot.”

Change “life is out to get me”                         to         “Life has blessings for me.”

He recommends that you “Repeat the new phrases, or ones you make up on your own, aloud for thirty days, once in the morning and once at bedtime. If you listed “My opinions don’t matter,” then say aloud, “my opinions do matter,”and so on. Remember: Keep your thoughts positive because they become your words. Keep your words positive because they become your actions. Keep your actions positive because they become your values. Keep your values positive because they become your destiny.”

One ideal that most people have who struggle to learn how to stop drinking is that they tend to think of themselves first and others 2nd. There was a famous movie star on celebrity rehab and he struggled with addiction for years. Then he changed his thinking and started going to the shelter to help hand out food to the desperate people on the Hollywood strip. With the help of rehab he finally succeeded in quitting his addiction and got his career back. But the smarted move he made was to continue to help out at the shelter. The reason this was his best move was because when you give to people who can’t ever give back to you, you then have broken through to real love. Loving helpless people gave him a joy no Hollywood fame or million dollar movie contract ever could. Putting others first before himself helped him see that he has a purpose.

How to stop drinking Key Point #6 Say three times a day: “I will put others first”. Next, find a Physical way to help others. When you find ways to help others and when you treat them with love, real joy starts to enter your life.

John Howard Prin recommended saying “Life has blessings for me” everyday. I want to expand on that a little bit for the Spiritual portion of this video. The questions is does God bless people? Luke 11:28 says “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” So we have to obey everything in the Bible to have an overflowing of Blessings. But if you have addictions you have to find a starting point to try to start to get at least some blessings. When we stop drinking we should expect some Blessing from God. When we stop drinking we are obeying Ephesians 5:18 which says “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit”. Even more importantly if we additionally obey the other half of the verse and also pray to be filled with the Spirit we will increase our blessing. Most people think that the key for an alcoholic’s is to learn how to stop drinking. But if you want a vibrant awesome life the key is to learn how to stop drinking and to be filled with the Spirit. There are many articles on how to be filled with the Spirit on the internet. But let’s get back to talking more about blessings. If we obey more and more of the Bible’s commandments we will increase our blessing. If we strive to obey all of the commandments blessings will start to flow. This obedience will then fuel our need to find our purpose. This brings more blessings. The reason we do all of this is so that one day we can spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When we put it all together we can live in God’s full blessing and we will start to have fullness of joy.

How to quit drinking

I have a 40 day program called Drugs and Drinking no more (which you can access on the left). With that program I give you a few things to work on each day. Quite frankly I put in way more idea’s in this article than I should have put in for a single read. So you can choose to read this or start with day one of my 40 day program (which you can access on the left).

I usually start these articles by talking about the massive amounts of destruction the addiction will do to you. In this case I am not going to do that because many people know all about the destruction but they still can’t stop. But I will give you the short version. How to stop drinking#1: drinking will ruin you, destroy your health and sometimes harm others. But instead of dwelling on that I am going to talk a little bit about why many people indulge.

Addictions are popular when people have something missing in their lives or when they need to bury some pain or hurt. But when drugs  becomes an addiction it quickly becomes a dark hole where relationships, ethics and morals become a much lower priority than they should have.

How to stop drinking#2: For some people one of the main reasons you indulge is because that is one of the few things that you feel like you have control over. It is your choice, it is your thing – it is who you are. But this is a cruel lie. A drinking addiction is a force and it is a driving force. How to stop drinking#3: There are some addictions that we think we are controlling but those addictions are actually controlling us. Over time drinking causes a loss of control of everything.

So why do people keep indulging after they have decided to quit? In most people there is a dueling of personalities. Your mind tells you that you have to stop drinking  but your pleasure seeking flesh tells you that it will feel good.

Key Point #1 As long as you are ruled by the pleasure principle you will always struggle with addiction. The pleasure seeker may become selfish, immature, demanding and short sited. How to stop drinking#4: In the long run, pleasure which is from an addiction always has a price to pay which is much higher than what you want to pay.

How to stop drinking tip #5: Instead of being ruled by the pleasure principle strive to be ruled by the moral principle. The moral principle is wise and rational and it leads to real long term joy instead of fake short term pleasure which leads to destruction. This principle believes that rules like that of your country or laws from the Bible are there to make your life better. When you follow this principle you willingly give up your solution of choice (drinking ) in exchange for another activity. How to stop drinking tip #6: The reason you make this choice is because you now believe that choosing an alternative activity will give you the best life over the next 7 days and longer. So if you stay clean today and develop new activities you may have a hard day today but your week and your future will be better.

How to stop drinking tip #7: Always choose the Wisdom of staying clean today so that you can have a good life all week, and all year instead of giving in to the short term pleasure and destruction of drinking  for one day. Over time staying clean is a lifestyle which is always better.

Drinking  is an escape for many people. One can escape from tension, anger, lack of success, pain and many other things. How to stop drinking tip #8: We need to get rid of the escapist mindset because our one day of escape always ruins more than one day and it often ruins a whole week or longer. Along the same lines many have the philosophy that if it feels good do it. The problem is, that the feeling good of a few hours usually causes the feeling bad of a few days. Instead of having this damaging mindset, embrace finding your purpose, and living the right way which will lead to happiness over time.

How to stop drinking tip #9: Develop the habit of thinking about other things all of the time instead of thinking about drinking .

How to stop drinking tip #10: We can see that being overly sensitive to emotional pain or failure is often a trigger to addiction. So first of all we need to be determined to be tougher and more emotionally ready for life’s constant problems. 2nd, negative emotions can lead us into addiction.

How to stop drinking tip #11: we need to always work on getting rid of anger and other negative emotions which are often hidden triggers. Lastly we need to avoid circumstances which lead to negative emotions (if possible). Good planning and flexible planning can help you avoid circumstances which will trigger you.

How to stop drinking tip #12: John Howard Prin also wrote “In time I learned that if my external motivation was strong enough, then my internal impulses could be curbed.”

For some people a great enough amount of pain or a change of thinking will cause them to change their behavior.

How to stop drinking tip #13: If what you think about has changed, then your internal impulses can be controlled.

This is key point #2. You need to think about the benefits of quitting more often than you think about the experience of drinking . How to stop drinking tip #14:  Make a note to remind yourself to do this untill it becomes a daily habit.

How to stop drinking tip #15: You need to think more about the destruction drinking  causes you than you think about the pleasure/pain relief it gives.

But we have to be brutally honest: we are as sick as our addictions are. If your addictions are causing harm to others you need to immediately get outside help.

How to stop drinking tip #16: Addiction tells us that something we can do (indulging in drinking ) can compensate for what is missing inside of us. It is a lie. Religion will tell you to quit drinking . To control the fire that burns inside of you. But I will tell you that you need to increase the passion in your life. Your life needs to surge with more passion for something then it ever has before. You were created to have a dramatic impact on this world. Most of you have never experienced the rush of knowing what God wants you to do.

How to stop drinking tip #17: “Solutions” Try Christianity. Study the Bible and learn how to get prayer answered (you will learn how in my 40 day program. Pray about negative emotions that may be a trigger for you. Learn to understand that the commands in the Bible are there so that you can avoid destruction and find real joy. Learn to understand the destruction of sin. Pray always about finding your purpose and learn about living in the glory of Jesus Christ. He will fill what is missing in your life but you have to figure out what He wants you to do. God wants you to find your purpose and He might someday want you to spread the Gospel. When you learn how to do what God wants you to do, you will start to have more passion and joy than you ever had.
