Sex/Porn – Quitting a Porn Addiction: day 20

Magic Lever

What if we could pull a magic lever and never be tempted by our addiction ever again? While there is no magic lever there is a lever. Some have pulled it 55% of the way down, others 65%, others 80% but only a few pull it 100% of the way down. The reason the lever is not pulled all the way down is because the farther we pull it the harder it gets to continue.

55% pull – many have developed some skill in fighting addiction. Changed thinking, awareness of triggers etc. Other have that plus have added a real relationship with Jesus including Bible study and pray – putting them at 65%. Temptation gets lighter.

Others have all that plus now they are fighting to find their purpose, help others and let people know about their exciting relationship with Jesus. A new light filled way of life and an 80% pull. Temptation has decreased quite a bit – they have a lot of others important things to focus on.

Proverbs talks about a 100% pull:   Proverbs 3:5-6 New International Version (NIV) Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

In all your ways submit to him: this is where the pull gets really hard. But remember the reward “He will make your paths straight.” We all underestimate how great our lives will be when He makes our paths straight.

I know someone who always Trusts and always submits to God. Their life is great and they are always filled with joy. But it is really hard work to submit in all your ways. Are you up for the challenge?

It is good to notice how the simple things in life are better when you avoid addiction. Yesterday I enjoyed sitting around talking to my wife. Cutting the grass was a nice relaxing experience. I watched and enjoyed sports on TV. I was not being driven by addiction. My whole day was better because of that.

Having said that, I love thrills. Yesterday I found a very exciting game to play which satisfied my thrill seeking nature. Instead of drugs for thrills you may want to try skydiving, hang gliding, auto racing, boxing, scuba diving, flying, platform diving, sailplaning, bungee jumping, skiing, ski jumping, wilderness adventure, river rafting, rock climbing or games.

Relationships: many of us have allowed relationships to drive us back to addiction. Relational discord happens when you allow others, to occupy the place that was reserved for Jesus Christ. What happens when another person becomes the center of your universe? You end up putting all kinds of pressure on the person who you want to complete you. They will never be able to do it and they will let you down.

Common situations. We allow another persons pain to be the center of our universe. Or another persons wrong doing. Even another persons affection cannot occupy the center of our universe. We will never be great at living or loving until we experience great love. When you believe and recieve Jesus Christ, what you get in response is unfailing love. When we move Jesus back into the center of our lives we can begin to find peace, joy and sobriety.

Thomas Horvath in his book Sex, Drugs, Drugs and Chocolate said the following: “Addiction can be thought of as a bad habit. If you eliminate this bad habit, you will be creating a vacuum, an empty spot in your life. Nature abhors a vacuum. If you do not fill this vacuum with something new (like a good habit, a positive addiction), there is a significant risk that the addiction will return. For instance, if you end all you friendships because all your friends are users, but do not develop new friendships, you will get lonely. As your loneliness increases, it will be increasingly easy to go back to your old friends. Any repeated action or activity that serves your ultimate goals and values is a good habit. I suggested earlier that by living in accordance with your ultimate goals and values, you increase the chances for being happy.

What vacuum have you created by your goal to quit porn or out of control sex?

You need a 3 pronged plan to fill this vacuum. Write out your plan of how you will fill this vacuum today, this week and this month.

If you are a Christian memorize 2nd Corinthians 3:17 – Now the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Dont let sin ruin your life. When you let sin in, the Spirit of the Lord leaves. The Bible says we should work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

The sense in which we are to work out our salvation in fear and trembling is twofold. First, the Greek verb rendered “work out” means “to continually work to bring something to completion or fruition.” We do this by actively pursuing obedience in the process of sanctification, which Paul explains further in the next chapter of Philippians. He describes himself as “straining” and “pressing on” toward the goal of Christlikeness (Philippians 3:13-14). The “trembling” he experiences is the attitude Christians are to have in pursuing this goal—a healthy fear of offending God through disobedience and an awe and respect for His majesty and holiness. Obedience and submission to the God we revere and respect is our “reasonable service” (Romans 12:1-2) and brings great joy. Psalm 2:11 sums it up perfectly: “Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.” We work out our salvation by going to the very source of our salvation—the Word of God—wherein we renew our hearts and minds (Romans 12:1-2), coming into His presence with a spirit of reverence and awe.
When we repent of our sin the Spirit of the Lord returns. However Hebrews 10 implies that we can run out of chances.
Psalm 147:11
the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

PRAYER FOR FREEDOM FROM ADDICTION

Lord Jesus, You said, “I have come to set the captives free.” We are captive and need Your healing touch. Free us, Lord, from our addictions, so that we will be:
…free from the cares and worries that stifle our happiness;
…free from sins that cling to us, and to which we cling;
…free from all compulsive behavior that prevents us from becoming what You, Lord, have planned for us.
Bring us, loving Savior, to the experience of abundant life which You promised. Amen.

Quitting a porn addiction

Porn addiction has unique challenges. Often porn is a compulsively driven activity which seems to fill an empty place in your life. Sometimes it fills a need for excitement and other times it is used to forget pain or distress. Porn tunes out reality and puts you in a fantasy world. Some people take this porn fantasy world to such an extreme that it causes them to lose any chance of having real love and intimacy.

Porn is a giant vacuum which seems to give an answer to a vacancy in our lives. Michael Hardiman in his book Overcoming addicting says. “As the feeling of emptiness increases, the person tries harder to fill it with what is actually causing the emptiness, leading to the futile cycle that seems to be a central element in all addiction, namely, using something to meet one’s needs that can’t really meet those needs, and that damages the person in the process”.

Many people with this addiction do not understand the effects that this habit has on them. The reason for this is there are some direct effects and many indirect effects. First the direct effects. Porn addiction can hurt marriages, jobs, finances, families and many other things and it can be a pathway to the disaster of infidelity and divorce.

But for many people it is the indirect effect that is killing them and they don’t even realize it.

Maybe you just keep staying up late, your job performance suffers and you get fired. Maybe you keep looking at porn and your interest in your spouse starts to decline (statistically two-thirds of addicts experience a loss of interest in sexual intercourse even when they are in a long term relationship. Maybe porn is your priority and your finances suffer because you just don’t care anymore. Quitting a porn addiction tip #1: Chris Diggins from Relationship Counseling Seattle said “Porn by its very nature isolates an individual-making him more intent on satisfying selfish needs even at the expense of his marriage, family, financial stability, and career”.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #2 When porn has become your master, then you have become its slave. It will take everything from you that you will let it take, then it will continue to take other things.

Porn addiction can lead to anxiety, sleep problems, introverted activities, and severe depression. The short term excitement and pleasure that it gives comes with a ton of pain, damage and lingering psychological effects.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #3.To quit a porn addiction the first step is to clean out everything from your house, work and everywhere else that is porn and also to clean out anything that may trigger your porn. Next you need to make changes to stay clean. Uncut movies are often filled with suggestive themes and sometimes nudity.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #4 If you look at any nudity or smut you will fall back into your addiction. It will either happen that day or that week.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #5 Do not rent movies and do not have movie channels like HBO, Showtime etc. If you get free movie channels that still show nudity block them so that you can’t even surf through them. If you want to find clean movies to watch, use the program guide to that you don’t wander upon a nude scene that will likely put you over the edge.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #6 Instead of watching uncut movies the best solution is to wait for the movie to be released to TV. There are 2 advantages to this. The first is that TV takes out a lot of the nudity. The 2nd is that if you didn’t pay for the film and if it is smutty it is easier to change the channel.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #7 Always be learning what triggers your addiction. For you, TV shows which talk about smut may do it or nonnude scenes which show people in bed acting things out may trigger you. So always be learning about what triggers you, and always be making changes to avoid these triggers like the plague.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #8 However the best solution for cleaning up your entertainment viewing is to find new clean things to view. There are many clean shows out there that you can watch. Develop new habits and routines. Don’t surf on your TV, use the program guide until you know that what you will watch will not trigger you.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #9 Watch TV with your remote next to you at all times. Even clean shows nowadays slip into the gutter from time to time. Instantly change the channel if what you are watching is a trigger point for you. Don’t let one minute of indulgence bring you back into the destruction your addiction causes you.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #10 Internet Porn. Never keep porn sites in your favorites.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #11 Never turn on your computer until you know exactly what you are going to do or watch.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #12 If porn is causing you destruction get a porn filter.

Realize that sometimes what you are looking at or thinking about when you are not on your computer can be a hidden trigger that only reveals itself when you turn your computer on.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #13 Avoid seemingly borderline websites like 100 hottest celebrities, bikini hotties, 100 sexiest bodies etc. Looking at these people for you is likely the same as an alcoholic saying they can drink just one beer.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #14 You need to find alternative activities and entertainment in order to succeed.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #15 Make a goal to have a plan (written is best) of what clean activities you can do over the next two days. Do this every day.

The rest of this video will contain material which is Spiritual in nature only. The Bible says in Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. So lust = idolatry. Idolatry is the worship of something. Matthew 5:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 says 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Yes God loves you and He will forgive you for your past sin, but you have to stop. Why does God care if we look at someone with lust? The reason is because He knows about all of the destruction it causes. Quite frankly God insists that we live a happy purpose filled, productive life.

To find your purpose start by praying and reading the Bible daily (Matthew and 1st Corinthians are good places to start. Video’s 1 and 2 have a lot of info on how to stop addiction and how to find your purpose. Video #2 has info on how to become a Christian.

Lastly never give up, never, never, never.

Quitting a porn addiction

I have a 30 day program called Sex/Porn freedom in 30 days (which you can access on the left). With that program I give you a few things to work on each day. Quite frankly I put in way more idea’s in this article than I should have put in for a single read. So you can choose to read this or start with day one of my 30 day program (which you can access on the left).

I usually start these articles by talking about the massive amounts of destruction the addiction will do to you. In this case I am not going to do that because many people know all about the destruction but they still can’t stop. But I will give you the short version. Quitting a porn addiction #1: porn will ruin you, destroy your health and sometimes harm others. But instead of dwelling on that I am going to talk a little bit about why many people indulge.

Addictions are popular when people have something missing in their lives or when they need to bury some pain or hurt. But when porn  becomes an addiction it quickly becomes a dark hole where relationships, ethics and morals become a much lower priority than they should have.

Quitting a porn addiction #2: For some people one of the main reasons you indulge is because that is one of the few things that you feel like you have control over. It is your choice, it is your thing – it is who you are. But this is a cruel lie. An out of control sex   addiction is a force and it is a driving force. Quitting a porn addiction #3: There are some addictions that we think we are controlling but those addictions are actually controlling us. Over time porn causes a loss of control of almost everything.

So why do people keep indulging after they have decided to quit? In most people there is a dueling of personalities. Your mind tells you that you have to stop porn   but your pleasure seeking flesh tells you that it will feel good.

Key Point #1 As long as you are ruled by the pleasure principle you will always struggle with addiction. The pleasure seeker may become selfish, immature, demanding and short sited. Quitting a porn addiction #4: In the long run, pleasure which is from an addiction always has a price to pay which is much higher than what you want to pay.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #5: Instead of being ruled by the pleasure principle strive to be ruled by the moral principle. The moral principle is wise and rational and it leads to real long term joy instead of fake short term pleasure which leads to destruction. This principle believes that rules like that of your country or laws from the Bible are there to make your life better. When you follow this principle you willingly give up your solution of choice (porn) in exchange for another activity. Quitting a porn addiction tip #6: The reason you make this choice is because you now believe that choosing an alternative activity will give you the best life over the next 7 days and longer. So if you stay clean today and develop new activities you may have a hard day today but your week and your future will be better.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #7: Always choose the Wisdom of staying clean today so that you can have a good life all week, and all year instead of giving in to the short term pleasure and destruction of porn for one day. Over time staying clean is a lifestyle which is always better.

Porn is an escape for many people. One can escape from tension, anger, lack of success, pain and many other things. Quitting a porn addiction tip #8: We need to get rid of the escapist mindset because our one day of escape always ruins more than one day and it often ruins a whole week or longer. Along the same lines many have the philosophy that if it feels good do it. The problem is, that the feeling good of a few hours usually causes the feeling bad of a few days. Instead of having this damaging mindset, embrace finding your purpose, and living the right way which will lead to happiness over time.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #9: Develop the habit of thinking about other things all of the time instead of thinking about porn  .

Quitting a porn addiction tip #10: We can see that being overly sensitive to emotional pain or failure is often a trigger to addiction. So first of all we need to be determined to be tougher and more emotionally ready for life’s constant problems. 2nd, negative emotions can lead us into addiction.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #11: we need to always work on getting rid of anger and other negative emotions which are often hidden triggers. Lastly we need to avoid circumstances which lead to negative emotions (if possible). Good planning and flexible planning can help you avoid circumstances which will trigger you.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #12: John Howard Prin also wrote “In time I learned that if my external motivation was strong enough, then my internal impulses could be curbed.”

For some people a great enough amount of pain or a change of thinking will cause them to change their behavior.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #13: If what you think about has changed, then your internal impulses can be controlled.

This is key point #2. You need to think about the benefits of quitting more often than you think about the experience of porn  . Quitting a porn addiction tip #14:  Make a note to remind yourself to do this untill it becomes a daily habit.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #15: You need to think more about the destruction porn   causes you than you think about the pleasure/pain relief it gives.

But we have to be brutally honest: we are as sick as our addictions are. If your addictions are causing harm to others you need to immediately get outside help.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #16: Addiction tells us that something we can do (indulging in porn  ) can compensate for what is missing inside of us. It is a lie. Religion will tell you to quit porn  . To control the fire that burns inside of you. But I will tell you that you need to increase the passion in your life. Your life needs to surge with more passion for something then it ever has before. You were created to have a dramatic impact on this world. Most of you have never experienced the rush of knowing what God wants you to do.

Quitting a porn addiction tip #17: “Solutions” Try Christianity. Study the Bible and learn how to get prayer answered (you will learn how in my 40 day program. Pray about negative emotions that may be a trigger for you. Learn to understand that the commands in the Bible are there so that you can avoid destruction and find real joy. Learn to understand the destruction of sin. Pray always about finding your purpose and learn about living in the glory of Jesus Christ. He will fill what is missing in your life but you have to figure out what He wants you to do. God wants you to find your purpose and He might someday want you to spread the Gospel. When you learn how to do what God wants you to do, you will start to have more passion and joy than you ever had.
